Exterior Prep 101: Washing, Scraping and Priming, The Steps

If you’ve ever seen exterior paint peel, bubble, or flake sooner than it should, there’s a good chance the issue wasn’t the paint itself, it was the prep. At Roca’s Painters, we’re big believers in prep-first craftsmanship because prep is what determines whether an exterior looks good for a season… or for years. Here’s a homeowner-friendly breakdown of the three prep steps that matter most: wash, scrape, prime.

Step 1: Washing (so paint can bond)

Before painting, the surface has to be clean. Washing removes:
  • Dirt and grime
  • Pollen buildup
  • Mildew
  • Chalky residue from old paint
If those contaminants stay on the surface, new paint may not adhere properly, leading to premature failure.

Step 2: Scraping + Sanding (Removing what’s already failing)

If paint is already loose, cracked, or peeling, painting over it won’t “seal it in.” It will keep failing underneath. Scraping removes loose material, and sanding helps feather edges so the finished surface looks smooth—not patchy or ridged.

Step 3: Priming (The Bridge Between Surface and Finish)

Primer is what helps paint stick to bare or problem areas and provides a consistent base for topcoats. Priming is especially important when:
  • Bare wood is exposed
  • Previous paint is failing in spots
  • Repairs were made
  • There’s uneven porosity in the surface
Skipping primer can lead to uneven sheen, poor adhesion, and early peeling.

What Prep Means For Timeline (And Why That’s A Good Thing)

Prep can take a meaningful portion of the project, especially on older homes or homes with heavy sun exposure. But here’s the tradeoff:
  • Rushed prep = paint that may fail early
  • Proper prep = a finish that looks better and lasts longer
We’d rather spend the time up front than leave you with a “quick” paint job that doesn’t hold up.
